Bristol City spent £983,987 on agent fees over the last two transfer windows, a significant reduction on the previous year as the difference in intermediary costs continued to highlight the financial disparities in the Championship.
The Robins spent £1,392,048 the year prior, a reduction of £408,061, as the club continues to work hard to balance the books. Their current figure is the 16th highest in the second tier as the Football Association published its 2022/23 report into Registered Intermediary Fees across the four professional divisions in England and Wales.
The period covers February 1, 2022 to January 31, 2023, meaning last summer’s transfer window and the winter one just passed. Those transactions included the permanent transfers of Harry Cornick and Anis Mehmeti in January, the free transfers of Kane Wilson, Kal Naismith and Mark Sykes and the new contracts of Tommy Conway and Sam Bell.
Overall, it covers 15 different transactions including seven new signings and new updated contracts such as youngsters Callum Wood and Omar Taylor-Clarke. A look at their Championship rivals further shows the gulf in finances from clubs receiving parachute payments, a massive drop in comparison to the three relegated sides.
Norwich, Watford and Burnley all spent over £4m on agent fees while West Brom and Middlesbrough, both recently relegated, spent over £2m. In total, 15 clubs spent over £1m over the previous two transfer windows.
In total, Championship clubs spent a total of £36.6m which is lower than the £44.4 paid last year. Albeit Fulham contributed over £10m to that figure in their successful return to the top flight at the first time of asking. That figure is dwarfed by the £318,219,426 paid out in the Premier League while League One topped £5,694,614, an increase of 28 per cent from last year.
