Bristol City cult hero becomes free agent after having contract mutually terminated

Aberdeen have mutually terminated the contract of former Bristol City striker Jay Emmanuel-Thomas with five matches remaining of the season.

Emmanuel-Thomas, 31, was less than 12 months into a two-year contract with the Scottish side having joined them on a free transfer last summer after his deal with Livingston expired.

The striker made seven starts and eight substitute appearances in the Premiership this season, failing to hit the net, but fell out of favour following Jim Goodwin's appointment as manager in February.

JET's last appearance for Aberdeen came in a 16-minute cameo against St Johnstone on February 15 and he was left out of the squad for the last six matches.

A statement posted on the club's official website read: "The Club can this afternoon confirm it has terminated the contract of Jay Emmanuel-Thomas.

"The forward made 24 appearances for the Dons, making 12 starts and 12 substitute appearances and netted once.

"All at Aberdeen FC wish Jay the very best in his future career."

Since leaving City in 2015, JET spent three years at Queens Park Rangers where he had two loan spells with MK Dons and Gillingham.

He then had a stint in Thailand with PTT Rayong where he made 12 appearances before heading to Scotland with Livingstone and Aberdeen.

The striker announced himself as a fan favourite at Ashton Gate almost instantaneously when he scored on his debut in the opening game of the season against Bradford.

JET would then earn a legendary status just eight games into his City career when he scored a 30-yard thunderbolt against rivals Rovers in the first round of the Football League Trophy in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

He formed a prolific partnership with Sam Baldock in attack, scoring 21 goals in all competitions during his first season in BS3 and assisting a further 12.

JET would further endear himself to fans following the contribution he made to City's double-winning season of 2014/15, scoring nine league goals as the club secured promotion to the Championship before assisting Matt Smith twice in the Football League Trophy final win over Gillingham.
