Bristol City will be eagerly awaiting how the transfer tussle for former midfielder Josh Brownhill develops as Southampton reportedly join a seven-way race for Burnley man.
The 26-year-old is expected to leave Vincent Kompany's side this summer following their relegation to the Championship while a host of Premier League suitors could spark a welcomed bidding war.
According to 90 min, Saints are looking towards Brownhill with manager Ralph Hassenhuttl eager to sign a central midfielder. They are also plotting a contingency plan should James Ward-Prowse leave the club this summer.
The report adds how Southampton are one of seven Premier League clubs keeping an eye on his situation at Turf Moor alongside Everton, West Ham, Leicester, Leeds, Wolves and Brentford.
Whether there is credibility in each of these clubs holding a genuine interest remains to be seen but a return to the top-flight will come as no surprise following his impressive campaign last season despite the club's relegation.
Burnley reportedly value Brownhill at £15million which would constitute a £6m profit they paid City for his signature back in January 2020 in a deal that saw striker Nahki Wells heading in the opposite direction for £5m.
At the time, former CEO Mark Ashton confirmed a sell-on clause, when he said: "Absolutely [there is a sell-on clause]. I can’t give detail because I would get myself into a world of trouble with lawyers, but absolutely."
It is understood that City included a 20 per cent sell-on clause on any profit Burnley receive when they cash in. Therefore, if they sell him for £6m then the Robins will pocket around £1.2m. Crucially, there is no sell on with Brownhill's former club Preston North End, either.
That may not seem like a huge figure in football terms, but with plenty of Championship clubs cash-strapped this summer, the revenue will be gratefully received for Pearson who still has his own work to do in the transfer window. Similar sell-on clauses were included in both Adam Webster and Lloyd Kelly's transfer deals to Brighton and Bournemouth.
Pearson still wants three new additions to his squad this summer and are likely to raise money if Han-Noah Massengo leaves - although there is still every chance he could remain after the manager admitted no concrete offers have been received.
City pocketed an undisclosed fee during Kasey Palmer's switch to Coventry while Preston have also enquired about Nahki Wells. City are also keen to cash in on Tyreeq Bakinson, Taylor Moore and Zak Vyner should they receive suitable offers.
