Bristol City Council has launched the city's first Clean Air Zone designed to curtail air pollution in the city. From November 28, drivers of vehicles that do not comply with the emissions levels will have to pay a £9 charge stretching up to £100 for larger vans, trucks, coaches, buses or lorries.
Shoppers rushed to the city centre on Sunday (November 27) and Cabot Circus car park, in particular, was full before midday as people made the most of the last day before the operation was implemented. Houlton Street, where one of the entrances and exits for the Cabot Circus car park is, will fall just outside the Clean Air Zone.
To the North, the Clean Air Zone will cover Newfoundland Way to just past Houlton Street. It will then continue down Bond Street, up to St James Barton roundabout and then follow Marlborough Street. BristolLive has approached Cabot Circus to confirm the charges for the Cabot Circus car park, as it falls on the CAZ boundary.

Christmas is just around the corner and there are many festive markets taking place in the city centre in the lead-up to the big day. Bristol Christmas Market in Broadmead, one of the city's biggest festive events, is within the CAZ boundary. Here is a number of suggestions of how to still travel into the city to support these events if you're coming from further afield, while avoiding the charge.
By car
There are several car parks within walking distance of the city centre that don't require you to enter the Clean Air Zone:
- West End, Berkley Place
- Gardener Haskins, via Unity Road
- Brunswick Square, via Surrey Street
- Asda Superstore, East Street
The main car parks that serve the city centre that will incur a CAZ charge for non-compliant vehicles are: Cabot Circus, Temple Meads, The Galleries, Broadmead NCP, Nelson Street NCP, Rupert Street NCP, Millennium Square, and Maritime Heritage Centre.
By bus
The city centre is served by a number of different bus routes from all corners of Bristol. Bus stops serving Cabot Circus and the Broadmead area:

By rail
The main railway station that serves the city centre is Bristol Temple Meads. The car park for the station is within the CAZ, so you wouldn't be able to park there and not be charged, but if you're travelling from any of the local railway stations or from further afield, this is the most convenient station.
To get to Broadmead, if you exit the station through the main entrance and head down past the taxi rank and car park to the main road you will get to Temple Gate. Once there turn right and follow the main road all the way to Old Market roundabout. Then take the left turning towards Castle Street, follow the road round and you will reach Cabot Circus shopping centre and Broadmead.
Voi
Voi is offering free e-scooter rides to new drivers who sign up with the company. Since launching in 2020, Voi says its riders have helped take 2.8 million car journeys off the city’s streets and now it wants more people to adopt green travel by switching to less air-polluting alternatives.
