Bristol Broadmead Lidl set to open next month at former H&M

It has been a long time coming but Lidl’s first Bristol city centre store is on track to open in September. Lidl first confirmed its plans to take over the former H&M site on Union Street back in November 2020 when the clothing retailer closed its doors for good during the pandemic.

And the company has now said the Broadmead branch should be opening its doors to the public in September, making it the first Lidl site in the city centre. Speaking to Bristol Live on the Broadmead site, a spokesperson for Lidl said: “We are very much looking forward to opening our new Lidl supermarket on Union Street, Bristol and are hoping to welcome customers later this summer.

“Once opened, the store will create around 40 new jobs for the local area and we would like to thank everyone for their continued patience and understanding as we progress our new store.” The Lidl website is already advertising jobs at the new city centre store. They range from part-time cleaners to full-time shift managers.

Vivienne Kennedy, head of Broadmead BID, said: “We’re very pleased that Lidl will be opening soon on the corner of Union Street and Nelson Street. We believe it's going to be a great addition to Bristol Shopping Quarter, where the retail offer continues to evolve to meet today’s consumer needs.

“The news has been greeted very positively on our social media channels with people mentioning Lidl favourites they’re looking forward to buying from the new store.”

And shoppers have already shown their support for the new Lidl, which is directly opposite a branch of Tesco Express. The advertising hoardings outside the Lidl site have even been daubed with the words ‘every Lidl helps’ - a humorous take on the familiar Tesco ‘every little helps’ slogan.

Reacting to a post about the new Lidl on the Bristol Shopping Quarter Facebook page, shopper Elisabeth Claire commented ‘I know where I’ll be doing my food shop!’ and Zac Jones described the opening as ‘well needed’.

Laura Caddick said the new store would be ‘another little stop after work’ and Michaela Belfield said ‘it’s going to be very popular’.
