Bristol Airport drivers warned to avoid A370 after crash which left five people in hospital

Five people have been taken to hospital after a serious road crash which has left one person fighting for their life. Police say one of the five injured in the two-car smash is in a critical condition.

The accident closed the A370 Weston Road in Congresbury this afternoon (Sunday). Drivers, particularly those heading to Bristol Airport, are being urged to avoid the area around Congresbury in North Somerset.

The road was closed between junction 21 of the M5 and Congresbury to allow emergency services to reach the scene. Police say two cars were involved in the accident on the A-road, which runs between Bristol and Weston-super-Mare.

According to traffic website Inrix the accident happened 'near the caravan dealers' and the road remains closed. A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said this evening: "We were called at around 2.15pm today (Sunday 26 February) following a collision on the A370 Weston Road, in Congresbury. The collision involved two cars, one of which has left the road.

"Five people have been taken to hospital, one in critical condition. The A370 has been closed between M5 junction 21 and Congresbury while emergency services attend the scene.

"We would advise drivers to seek alternative routes, especially those travelling to Bristol Airport. If anyone witnessed the collision or have any dashcam footage and have yet to speak to police, please call 101 and quote reference 5223046769."

Inrix is still reporting that the road is still closed. It says: "A370 Bristol Road in both directions closed, slow traffic due to accident between Puxton Lane (Hewish) and B3133 High Street (Congresbury). Affecting traffic between Congresbury and Weston-super-Mare."
