In case you had mistakenly thought that the meagre decrease in Sydney rents meant Australia’s rental crisis was on the mend, another absolutely bonkers share room offer has been listed on Facebook. Quick question; how do you feel about showering in a portaloo?
A post to a Facebook share house group has gained negative attention after it advertised a single bedroom and private bathroom in the Brisbane suburb of Sunnybank Hills, all for the competitive price of $200 per week.
There is one teensy tiny catch though — the “private bathroom” isn’t so much of a bathroom, per say, but is more of a… portaloo.
Not just any portable toilet though! This one has built-in plumbing and a shower! What more could a renter possibly want?
Okay… it’s no bathroom reveal from The Block, that’s for sure. But a flush is a flush, right?
The room’s advertisement — which has since been removed — stated that for $200 a week the tenant gets a “furnished private room and bathroom only”, with no access to the kitchen in the home.
Because who cooks anyway? Eating out every meal is so much more economical.
In a later post the owner made an alternative offer of $240 per week for “full access”, which would presumably give the renter access to a kitchen.
After screenshots of the absurd listing were shared to the r/shitrentals subreddit, punters began roasting it for, well, everything.
“It’s the picture of the kitchen you won’t be allowed to use for me,” one person wrote.
“So you can’t use a kitchen, you’ll need to eat out all the time, and the external portaloo is a bit fucking dodgy… in Sunnybank Hills,” another said.
“For $200pw — where’s the upside in this shit show?”
One person compared the cost of the offer to their current living space and pointed out that for the same price they get “not one but two real toilets, plus a fully functioning kitchen”.
Meanwhile others questioned the legality of the offer, with some calling for the listing to be reported to the council.
According to the Queensland Residential Tenancies Authority, the minimum housing standards of a rental must include:
- adequate plumbing and drainage,
- hot and cold water suitable for drinking,
- private bathroom areas with flushable toilets connected to a waste disposal system, sewer, or tank.
Soooo technically speaking, this all looks above board due to the plumbing of the bathroom.
However, to quote the Bible Of Housing Law AKA The Castle (1997): “It’s the vibe of it. I rest my case.”
And this place is NOT the vibe.
