Brisbane seek to halt poor MCG record against Tigers

Brisbane will use their poor recent record against Richmond at the MCG as fuel for motivation in Saturday's fixture, coach Chris Fagan says.

The Lions are on a seven-game losing streak at the 'G against the Tigers, with their last win there coming in May, 2009.

"It's an astonishing sort of statistic,' Fagan told reporters on Thursday.

"It will get mentioned this week. It's something we do want to tick off."

The last meeting of the clubs at the MCG was round 20 in 2022 when Brisbane held a 72-36 half-time lead but lost by seven points.

"The last time we played them there we coughed up a decent lead and missed out on the win, so it will be something we use as a bit of motivation this week," Fagan said.

Fagan's reigning premiers enter Saturday's fixture as hot favourites to down Richmond, who finished bottom last season.

The encounter is Brisbane's first match at the MCG since their grand-final win last season.

"We don't talk about the MCG any more like we used to, it used to be a bugbear of ours and was backed up by the statistics," Fagan  said.

"Over the last couple of years we have shown we can play pretty good footy at that ground."

The Lions have started their premiership defence with three consecutive wins to sit third on the ladder, while the Tigers have one win from their three matches.

And it's that one win - against Carlton in round one - which leaves Fagan wary.

"There was the evidence against Carlton, it looked like it was going to be a one-sided game and then they (Richmond) got a sniff and you couldn't stop them," he said.

"That wasn't that long ago so we're mindful of that lesson that Carlton would have got.

"And hopefully our boys are aware of that and understand the need to go out and play our best footy and play it consistently."
