Brisbane man charged with assault and torture of children

A Brisbane man accused of torturing and assaulting his three young children, including his five-year-old son, who is in a coma, has been denied bail.

Paramedics were called to a home in Brisbane's south on Saturday after reports that the boy was suffering significant injuries.

The child was taken to hospital in a critical condition where he remains in a coma.

Later that evening, police allege the boy's two siblings, a six-year-old girl and an eight-year-old boy, were found locked in the garage of the property.

Police allege they were also suffering extensive yet non-life threatening injuries and were taken to hospital.

The man, 29, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the children, was charged with more than a dozen offences, including multiple counts of assault occasioning bodily harm and torture.

He appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court via videolink on Monday, where he applied for bail.

During a brief hearing, police submitted to the court that treating doctors of the five-year-old believe the boy would have died if he did not receive medical treatment when he did.

The court was also told that his two siblings had made disclosures to police that substantiated the allegations as they currently stand.

A magistrate refused his bail application noting his criminal history including several breaches of bail, stating he was an unacceptable risk of not appearing.

His matter will return to court next month.
