Brisbane designer creates 'upcycled birthday suit' for Harry Styles

Rachel Burke started her DIY fashion blog in the suburbs of Brisbane more than 10 years ago, but her designs could now be worn by global pop star Harry Styles.

The artist and designer's self-professed "bold" and "colourful" style caught the eye of American venue Acrisure Elite Arena in Palm Springs, California, where Harry Styles celebrated his 29th birthday this week.

Ms Burke was asked by the venue if she would design a custom birthday suit as a gift for the star singer.

"The email dropped into my inbox and I will never forget it," she said.

"The subject was 'Harry Styles birthday suit' and as soon as I saw it, I was like, 'Oh my God' and started shaking."

Accepting the challenge, she got straight to work to create the piece.

"I didn't have a very long lead time, I had to get it done in a week, I just worked day and night because I'm totally independent," Ms Burke said.

"It's been crazy."

Ms Burke faced some delays to the design process.

"I had to wait for some of his measurements, which was also very surreal, and make sure that everything was a go before I actually cracked into it.

"I just worked my tush off for a week."

Styles' 'upcycled birthday suit'

Styles' birthday suit involves three separate pieces created with colourful tinsel and using recycled products.

"It's what we're calling an upcycled birthday suit. It features a pair of pants, a really long vest and what I like to call the trash jacket that has a detachable massive train on it," she said.

Ms Burke sees the design is a collaboration between herself and her followers from all over the world.

"My beautiful Instagram followers last year sent me so much tinsel that they had left over from their parties just lying around the house. And I was able to use all that material to create this outfit for him. It's just so surreal."

The connection with her fans has crossed borders, with supporters in Palm Springs on hand to tell her if Styles wears the design in his concert.

Creating her brand has been a long journey but Ms Burke feels it has been worth it.

"It's been such a DIY journey. Honestly, I just started a blog literally, like maybe like over 10 years ago now, making dresses on my friends and things just really grew organically," she said.

"Running your own business is hard. I mean, I have a three-and-a-half-year old. So being a parent, and you know, managing a business where I make everything is definitely challenging. But it is so worthwhile.

Rachel said she had a lot to be excited about, with a red carpet look on the horizon.

"You might see something at the Grammys next week, too, which is very exciting."

Styles begins his tour of Australia later this month.
