Brisbane City records coldest morning this year, as several Queensland towns drop below freezing

Brisbane City has recorded its coldest morning of the year and several Queensland towns have seen the temperature drop below freezing.

Brisbane dropped to 7.3 degrees Celsius, but Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecaster Kimba Wong said the western suburbs were "more like one degree".

"That was probably a little bit of a shock for people going out with that this morning," she said.

Ms Wong said the cold weather was felt across the state.

The Granite Belt was covered in frost, with some areas like Applethorpe dropping to -3.2C.

"We're looking at pretty widespread areas of frost for central and southern Queensland with those sorts of minimum temperatures," Ms Wong said.

"And that is set to continue for the next several days."

Kingaroy, Wellcamp, Warwick, and Oakey all dropped to below zero on Sunday morning.

Granite Belt resident Geoff Davenport woke up to find "really big" frost around his brewery in Stanthorpe.

"We already had heavy frost on the windows of the car at 10 o'clock at night," he said.

"And then it's big frost this morning."

For more than 13 years, Mr Davenport and his wife have been running a brewery on the Granite Belt.

He said it was common for the area to receive frost "from Anzac Day through to September".

"This year it's been a lot milder," he said.

"So we've only had a handful of really big frost."

But he said Sunday morning's frost was the biggest he had seen all year.

'It's going to remain'

The BOM predicts the cold weather to continue into next week.

"Unfortunately, the forecast is not changing too much for those who may be a little bit sick of the cold," Ms Wong said.

"It's going to remain."

But an incoming trough could bring a couple of showers to south-east Queensland from Tuesday.

"We have got a trough moving across the south-east and that will return the chance of a couple of showers," she said.

"And then following that, we're looking at a decent westerly burst of wind coming through across the south-east as well for the Wednesday."

But Ms Wong said it was unlikely to snow in the Granite Belt this week.

"There is a chance of some showers coming through to the Granite Belt during the day on Wednesday but at this stage it doesn't look quite cold enough," she said.
