Brighton show class after Newcastle draw even after only 'one team was going to win' claim

Graham Potter has paid tribute to Eddie Howe for doing an 'amazing job' at Newcastle United after his Brighton side were unable to find a way past the 'very strong' Magpies.

Brighton had a host of chances to win Saturday's game at the Amex, but the Seagulls were repeatedly thwarted by the visitors during a goalless draw. Nick Pope produced two stunning saves to deny Adam Lallana and Solly March while Kieran Trippier and Fabian Schar both made goalline clearances to keep Newcastle in the game.

Brighton ultimately had seven times as many shots on target than Newcastle, but the hosts just could not find the breakthrough and Pascal Gross fired wide late on when he should have scored from close range. It was hardly a surprise, then, that Eddie Howe was 'very pleased' after his side escaped with a point.

Although Potter understandably felt differently about the result, given the openings his side created, the Brighton boss showed his class after the game when he spoke about Newcastle and his opposite number.

"I wouldn't say we're happy with a point at all," he told reporters. "We accept the point because that's football but I thought our performance was very positive.

"If one team was going to win the game, I thought it was us against an opponent that's very strong.

"Eddie's done an amazing job. They're very well organised with pace and power in the team. You can see the points they've amassed since he's gone there and how strong they are in the Premier League.

"So when you take all that into consideration on a really hot day with difficult playing conditions, our boys were fantastic."
