Brighton plan 'new contract' for Moises Caicedo after Liverpool links

Liverpool could be about to be dealt a blow in their reported pursuit of Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo.

The Reds were heavily linked with the Ecuador international in the latter days of the summer transfer window. However, no move materialised with the Seagulls standing firm in their desire to keep the player.

Other clubs were also linked with Caicedo throughout the summer. Manchester United and Arsenal were credited with an interest, while it remains to be seen if new Chelsea boss Graham Potter wants to bring the player to his new club.

But according to a report in The Mirror, Liverpool could be dealt a blow in their hopes to sign Caicedo. It has been claimed that Brighton will look to hand the 20-year-old a new and improved contract.

Caicedo signed for Brighton from Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle for £4.5million in January 2021. He went on to have a loan spell with Belgian outfit Beerschot last summer, but returned in January after the temporary stint lasted just a few months

The report further states that Brighton want to reward Caicedo for the progress he has made since becoming a regular starter. It has been stated that the Seagulls want to put the midfielder on the same wage as the other first-team players, and want to protect the player’s value.

Caicedo still has three years left to run on his current deal, which is due to expire in 2025.

Liverpool waited until transfer deadline day to bring in a new midfielder this summer, although it was only a loan deal. Arthur Melo arrived from Juventus , with his only appearance so far coming as a late cameo in the 4-1 defeat at Napoli in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
