Brighton hopeful of keeping World Cup winner Alexis MacAllister

Brighton head coach Roberto De Zerbi believes it would suit both Brighton and Alexis MacAllister if the World Cup winner remains with the Seagulls until the end of the season.

MacAllister was one of the breakout stars of the World Cup in Qatar as Argentina went all the way and claimed victory over France in a thrilling final.

MacAllister is back in England after a fortnight in his homeland celebrating the win and he can expect to be the subject of increasing speculation over his future after his exploits in Qatar.

Brighton boss De Zerbi believes it would be wise for MacAllister to stay put for the time being.

He said: “I am happy if he wants to stay with us until the end of the season and I think it is better for him.

“For us, for sure, but also for him because in this moment changing team in January can be a problem for him. For us, but also for him.”

And De Zerbi noted that top of the agenda for Brighton was their trip to Goodison Park to take on Everton.

“We can’t speak about the transfer market, but the club know my ideas.

“However, tomorrow is an important game for us and I am only focused on Everton.”

While MacAllister has returned to England and rejoined his teammates, it is yet unknown when he will be ready to get back into action as Brighton - in 9th position at present - look to chase down those above them in the Premier League table.

“Mentally, for sure Alexis can play.

“Physically, I’m not sure but we will see tomorrow morning.”
