Brighton boss makes Mykhaylo Mudryk Ballon d’Or claim amid Arsenal £55m rejected transfer offer

Arsenal January transfer target Mykhaylo Mudryk has the potential to win the Ballon d'Or, according to former coach Roberto De Zerbi.

Mudryk has established himself as one of the standout young attackers in world football following his consistent goalscoring form for Shakhtar Donetsk over the past two seasons. After becoming a key member of De Zerbi's side last season, the 21-year-old has become a consistent threat in front of goal, with 18 goal involvements this term.

The Gunners saw a £55million bid including add-ons rejected earlier this week and are expected to return with a higher offer for the 21-year-old when the January transfer window opens.

Ahead of his side's Premier League clash with the Gunners tonight (Saturday), De Zerbi was questioned on Mudryk after he managed the winger during the 2021/22 season in Ukraine. Despite only working with Mudryk for six months or so after the Ukrainian season was cut short in February, the Italian coach has high expectations of the attacker.

"Mudryk is a fantastic player, but Brighton can't buy him," he said. "I like him, because I like all my ex-players. But Brighton can't buy him, Arsenal, I don't know.

"I think Mudryk can win the Ballon d'Or in the future. I know the value of Mudryk, he has the potential to win the Ballon d'Or."

The Gunners were told by Shakhtar CEO Serhii Palkin that the club are willing to sell Mudryk should a bid that matches their valuation arrive. He told Shakhtar's website: "Negotiations are continuing. We receive offers, but they are not the ones we would like to see on our table.

"We are open to negotiations, ready to exchange ideas and figures. If we will agree, then let it be so. If we will not, then let it be another time."

Arsenal boss Arteta opted to remain coy on his side's interest in the 21-year-old on Friday. When asked about the player, he said: "I cannot talk about players that are not Arsenal."
