A BRIDGE at a popular NC500 hotspot near Ullapool has announced its immediate closure “until further notice” due to a “potential structural issue”.
The suspension bridge, which crosses the River Droma at the Corrieshalloch Gorge, has closed while an investigation has been launched to check its structural integrity.
The Corrieshalloch Gorge National Nature Reserve was given £3.1 million in 2023 to revamp the area which included £10,000 of maintenance work on the suspension bridge.
However, The National Trust for Scotland (NTS), which manages the Wester Ross landmark, has announced the closure of the bridge until further notice while the investigation is carried out.
The NTS posted a statement on their website which said: “Please note that, as a precaution, the bridge over Corrieshalloch Gorge has been closed until further notice.
“Investigations are underway due to a potential structural issue. The Gateway to Nature Centre and linked pathways remain open.”
The bridge crosses a mile-long canyon, which the River Droma rushes through, and is a popular tourist spot as it is situated on the NC500 route despite the river taking its name from the Gaelic term “ugly hollow”.
The Victorian suspension bridge is just a short drive from Ullapool and only an hour from Inverness and overlooks a series of spectacular waterfalls.
Corrieshalloch Gorge is a designated National Nature Reserve and is home to a nationally rare species of crane fly, which benefits from the wet dead wood in the shaded areas of the gorge.
