Bride's voice returns for her to say 'I do' in hospital wedding after brain surgery

A woman who lost her voice following brain surgery and has had to endure a long road to recovery saw it return in time for her to say "I do" as she got married.

Darren and Michelle Norbury are now officially husband and wife after tying the knot at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield last Thursday.

Michelle wore a flamboyant wedding dress, and Darren had on a smart patterned suit and pink tie, with the backdrop a decorated hospital ward.

They were surrounded by pink and white balloons, bright flowers, cards, and a large wedding cake, reported LeedsLive.

The couple's magical day comes after a difficult time for Michelle, who wasn't sure if she'd be able to say the words "I do" on her big day.

Michelle had a meningioma excision in 2021 - brain surgery involving making an incision in the scalp and removing a piece of bone from the skull.

The surgery left her needing tracheostomy ventilation in her throat, subsequently leaving her without a voice.

The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust said Michelle needed to remain in their care until she was well enough to return home.

A spokesperson for the Trust said: "Michelle was understandably nervous when she first moved to our Trust (from Leeds in April), meeting a new team of carers can be daunting. But she quickly became part of the family."

The Trust added that after Michelle was put through a recovery plan and regained her voice just in time for when partner Darren proposed to her last month.

But as Michelle remains in hospital staff turned her ward into a dream wedding venue.

A spokesperson at the hospital added: "As soon as everyone on Gate 27 heard the news the wedding bells were ringing and the team sprung in to full wedding planning mode, helping Michelle pick a beautiful dress, arranging bunting, flowers and cake.

"On Wednesday they threw Michelle a surprise hen party and today there wasn’t a dry eye in the room during the ceremony. It’s moments like this that make our jobs extra special."

The ceremony reportedly left staff at the hospital in "high spirits" and the couple were photographed smiling together as husband and wife. A number of people shared their congratulations to the couple on social media.

One person said: "Congratulations Mr and Mrs Norbury so nice. Enjoy your Special day. Xxxx."

Another wrote: "Congratulations to you both, and wishing you a speedy recovery. Xx."

Similarly a further person said: "Many congratulations to you both...and well done Pinderfields for being a big part and host to wedding."
