Bride lays into new husband as he makes cutting blunder with £450 wedding cake

A bride was left gobsmacked on her wedding day when she allowed her new husband to make the first cut in their expensive £450 wedding cake - only for him to slice it into thin strips like a donner kebab.

Becca Thorne had just tied the knot with Darren Thorne and the couple were preparing for their first dance as husband and wife at their wedding reception on June 11th when they decided to do the ceremonial cutting of their cake first.

And in a viral video shared online, 40-year-old Darren and his civil-servant wife Becca, 38, can be seen discussing how best to slice the triple-tier cake - which featured a mouth-watering mix of cookies and cream, salted caramel and vanilla sponges - in the moments before it all went horribly wrong.

Instead of making a clean cut down the layers, Darren aimed for the middle layer of the cake and used the knife to slice off the beautiful floral decorations before continuing to sheer off the royal icing like a fast food worker slicing donner meat for a classic takeaway staple.

The catering staff were able to stop Darren from causing any further damage to the cake, but Becca and her wedding guests were left in stitches over the man's cutting blunder.

Becca, from Wokingham, Berkshire, said: "It's hilarious. The guests were laughing. Someone made a comment afterwards like 'what have you done?'

"I decided to give Darren the job of cutting the cake. I just gave him the knife thinking he might have been better at it than me but he obviously wasn't. I haven't seen him cut a cake before but we were in front of everyone so I thought I'd give it [to] him. It was an expensive cake and I didn't want to ruin it.

"When he started shaving off the icing, I thought 'what are you doing?' Why had he gone for that layer and why was it so far to the right? I could see as soon as he started cutting that he was basically shaving the side of the cake with the knife.

"Darren had quite a few drinks, I think that helped. He sliced the cake like a kebab. He loves kebabs.

"I think he said 'I think that turned out alright' and I said 'no, it hasn't. You're meant to eat it afterwards and I was looking at this slither of cake."

The couple, who had been engaged for around three years and together for 12, celebrated their big day with their two children Thea, four, and Grayson, two.

And the cake, which Becca described as "expensive", was made in an effort to please all the members of their family, including the little ones.

She added: "I think the cake cost about £450. It was quite expensive.

"We spent a long time trying to find the cake. I was quite picky about what layers I wanted it to have. I wanted something that was a bit more like what we and the kids would like. I chose cookies and cream for one layer, a salted caramel layer and a vanilla sponge with buttercream.

"I did the cake topper myself and the florists came in and placed their flowers on top of it."

Meanwhile, Darren has claimed he was suffering from stage fright at being the centre of attention and was so busy smiling for pictures that he didn't notice his 'poor' cake-cutting skills.

He commented: "I was more concerned with everybody staring at me and smiling for pictures than what I was actually doing.

"Having eaten cake before I was fairly confident I had the technique down. I didn't realise people were laughing until my new wife laid into me for doing such a poor job of cutting a slice.

"The cake tasted great - I'm just not a fan of icing so wanted to shave it off."

Becca shared a video of the moment on social media, where she's racked up more than 94,000 views and more than 6,000 likes and comments from viewers.

Several commenters joked Darren's blunder was grounds for an "immediate divorce", while others quipped he looked like he was expecting to enjoy the cake with a "side of cheesy chips".

One person said: "This is amazing. This is something my partner would do."

While another wrote: "Just garlic sauce on mine please boss - and a portion of cheesy chips."

And a third added: "I have honestly just laughed so much at this."
