People Before Profit's Brid Smith is set to retire from politics.
The TD for Dublin South Central confirmed she will not run in the next general election, marking the end of a decades long career. People Before Profit has announced that Hazel de Nortuin will step in as Ms Smith's successor as the party's candidate for the next election.
The politician won her Dail seat back in 2016 after three previous attempts. The former trade unionist is a firm advocate for women's rights and spoke openly about her experience with abortion back in 2017.
Ms Smith has also spoken out against bin taxes and has led calls for free public transport across Ireland. She remained opposed to the introduction of water charges back in 2015.
