Bricks thrown at car after it was deliberately driven towards group of people in Motherwell

Bricks were thrown at a moving car during a disturbance in Motherwell in the early hours of the morning.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard this week that it appeared the vehicle had been driven deliberately towards a group of people.

Thomas Gallagher, 31, of Taylor Avenue, Carfin, admitted culpable and reckless conduct by throwing bricks in Montalto Avenue on June 4, 2020.

Martin Carroll, 40, of Montalto Avenue, admitted possession of a bladed item - garden shears - without reasonable excuse.

Alice Carey, prosecuting, said CCTV operators saw a group of males outside Carroll's home around 1am.

She told the court: "They were looking along the street at a red car that was being driven deliberately towards them.

"Gallagher was seen to pick up bricks and throw them at the moving vehicle.

"The CCTV cameras then showed another vehicle arrive and collect three people. Carroll was in possession of garden shears and was seen to place these in the car.

"Police officers arrived and stopped the vehicle. Gallagher was in a rear passenger seat. Carroll had gone back to his house and he was arrested there."

Solicitors for the accused acknowledged they have previous convictions but have generally stayed out of trouble in recent years.

Sheriff John Speir deferred sentence until next month for background reports. Gallagher and Carroll were allowed to remain on bail.
