'Bricks and fireworks' thrown at police after mob gathers at house

POLICE were 'attacked with fireworks and bricks' after a 'large crowd' gathered outside a house.

Officers were called to a property in Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire, on Thursday evening after receiving reports of a large-scale disturbance.

Footage shared on social media shows multiple police vans, police with riot shields and a helicopter circling overhead.

The force has said that some members of the crowd began throwing objects, including bricks and fireworks, at them before dispersing.

Local Area Commander, Chief Inspector Ryan McMurdo said: “Around 8pm, we were called to reports of a large crowd gathering outside a house in Braehead.

“Unfortunately during the incident, some of those gathered became extremely hostile towards police.

"Objects including bricks and fireworks were thrown at officers and public order trained officers were called to assist. The crowd later dispersed.

“We have a duty to ensure the safety of everyone involved and although no officers were injured, this kind of behaviour is completely unacceptable.

“This type of disorder causes fear and alarm to residents and I would like to reassure the local community that our investigation is continuing to trace those involved."

Police have since increased patrolling in the area and they are working to identify and track down people who were involved in the alleged violence.

As a result of this plan, two 17-year-old boys and a 19-year-old man have since been arrested in connection with an incident on Strathleven Drive on Friday evening.

They were released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date.

Chief Inspector McMurdo added: "We are working to establish more details on the offences committed, identify those responsible and take the appropriate action.

"This will include reviewing any available video footage.

“We urge anyone with information to contact officers through 101 quoting reference number 3328 of March 16.

"Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained.

“Anyone with personal footage of the incident is asked to send it to the dedicated email address operationiridescent@scotland.police.uk.”
