Brian May 'terrified and lonely' while playing National Anthem on Buckingham Palace roof

Back in 2002, the Queen was celebrating 50 years on the throne with her Golden Jubilee.

Fast forward 20 years and Brits are now enjoying the Platinum Jubilee festivities over the big bank holiday weekend which will see people celebrating the Queen once again, as she’s been on the throne for 70 years.

A number of famous faces will be taking part in a big concert to mark the occasion on Saturday, June 4 - including Brian May, and it's not the first time he's done something like this.

May also performed at the Party at the Palace, kicking off the occasion by playing a rendition of God Save The Queen on his guitar on the roof of Buckingham Palace - something a little out of the ordinary.

The Guitarist performed the lonely solo high above the city and was accompanied by an orchestra far below him in the palace gardens, whilst being projected live to millions of people across the world.

Brian was later joined on stage by Roger Taylor to play 'Radio Gaga' with Phil Collins on lead vocals and 'We Will Rock You', 'We Are The Champions' and 'Bohemian Rhapsody', with the cast of the West End's We Will Rock You.

The concert marked the culmination of a huge national day of partying across the country and included some of the biggest hits from the Queen's 50-year reign, and ended on an incredible high, and now Brian May is set to perform for the Queen again to mark her 70 years on the throne.

It was an iconic moment, probably the most memorable of the entire event, and Brian May took to Instagram account to reminisce about the event.

In 2020, he wrote: “Amazing that 18 years ago, I was on top of Buckingham Palace.

“The loneliest place in the world, playing God Save The Queen and terrified out of my wits.

“But it’s one of those times where you face the fear and you’re never quite the same again after it.”

The Queen legend also gave a health update following his recent minor heart attack and other physical problems he’s been suffering in lockdown.

May said: “Hi folks, just a quick word, I actually managed to get to the music room.

“I’m recovering slowly, still crawling around the house on my hands and knees.

“Not very rock star-like.”

He signed off: “Anyway, wishing you all luck and hopefully one day I’ll be functional.

“And I’ll be out there and we’ll do some more great stuff…maybe! God bless.”

Well, he’ll be returning to our screens on June 4 when Queen and Adam Lambert will open the BBC ’s Platinum Party At The Palace concert.

Legendary rockers Brian May and Roger Taylor are set to kick off the proceedings alongside touring singer Adam Lambert, which will celebrate Queen Elizabeth's 70-year reign on the British throne - we can’t wait to see what they pull out of the bag this time!
