Brian Laundrie’s Parents Slam Gabby Petito Netflix Series: ‘Inaccuracies & Omissions’

The parents of Brian Laundrie have spoken out following the release of Netflix’s documentary about Gabby Petito‘s murder, criticising the series for its alleged one-sided portrayal of events.

For those who need a refresher, Gabby Petito was a 22-year-old aspiring travel vlogger who disappeared in 2021 while on a cross-country road trip with her fiancé Brian Laundrie. Her body was later found in Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park, having been beaten and strangled to death by Laundrie. He subsequently took his own life before Petito’s remains were discovered.

The case gripped the world and has now been turned into a three-part Netflix documentary titled American Murder: Gabby Petito, which dropped on February 17.

Now, Brian’s parents, Christopher and Roberta Laundrie, are firing back through their lawyer, Steven Bertolino. In a statement Bertolino told TODAY: “The documentary was what we expected. One perspective depicted as the ‘truth’ as seen through their lens. Similar to Republicans and Democrats fighting it out lately.”

Adding, “Each side believes their perspective is correct. Hard to see through the lens of the other with all the noise and distrust.”

The Laundries’ statement continued, “The documentary contained many inaccuracies, incorrect juxtapositions of timelines, and misstatements and omissions of fact — perhaps deliberate to capture their ‘truth’, perhaps due to simple error.”

Despite their criticisms, the Laundries acknowledged the tragic outcome of the case. Bertolino stated, “We all know Brian took Gabby’s life and Brian then took his own as well. Let the parents of both Gabby and Brian mourn and remember them in peace.”

It’s worth noting that the Laundrie family declined to participate in the documentary. Julia Willoughby Nason, one of the series’ directors, confirmed to TODAY that they had reached out to the Laundries but “they didn’t want to participate, and [they] respect that”.

The documentary has reignited public interest in the case, including the Laundrie parents’ actions during the investigation. Body camera footage shown in the series reveals Christopher and Roberta Laundrie’s reluctance to cooperate with police when officers first inquired about Petito’s whereabouts.

According to the Daily Mail, the footage shows an officer asking Christopher and Roberta: “When was the last time you saw Brian and Gabrielle?”

Christopher said that Brian was inside their North Port home and “that’s all I’m going to say”.

In March 2022, the Petito family filed a lawsuit against Christopher and Roberta Laundrie, alleging they had interfered with the search for their daughter. The two families reached a “confidential resolution” in February 2024.
