Brian Kerr's Stephen Kenny criticism after he extends Ireland contract

Brian Kerr remains unconvinced on Stephen Kenny as Ireland manager after he penned a contract extension this evening.

The Boys in Green boss will lead Ireland into their qualification campaign for Euro 2024 after an encouraging end to last year at the helm.

The former Dundalk supremo finished Ireland's World Cup qualifying campaign on a high after some bleak results in his opening games in charge.

Ireland managed wins over Andorra, Azerbaijan, Luxembourg and Qatar in the second half of 2021, after Kenny endured a winless run of eleven games after his appointment.

And speaking after Kenny's new contract was confirmed by the FAI this evening, Kerr pointed out that Ireland have lost some crucial games under Kenny.

"I'm happy for Stephen. The FAI haven't always been very good at renewing contracts, or they've renewed contracts before they should have," Kerr said during Virgin Media 's Champions League coverage.

He continued: “My view overall was that we went tamely out of three different competitions since Stephen got the job.

“We went out of the Nations League and failed to win a match against Finland, Bulgaria and Wales. Ultimately, that comes back on you, whether that’s around co-efficients or play-off places.

“Then we lost the play-off match (for Euro 2020), which was only a semi-final against Slovakia, and then the World Cup, we went out from the start. We lost the match with Serbia early on, lost to Portugal, maybe a little bit unfortunate to lose that match early on.”
