Brian Burns: Contract talks with Panthers currently ‘on hold’

If the Carolina Panthers and outside linebacker Brian Burns finally reach a long-term deal, it probably won’t be any time soon.

The two-time Pro Bowl pass rusher spoke with reporters following Saturday’s practice. He was, of course, asked about the current state of contract talks with the team—and it doesn’t seem like much is going on.

“I would probably say it’s on hold,” he said. “We haven’t really been in talks. ‘Cause I already told ’em once the season start, I’m all about ball. I can’t give 1000 percent on the field and to my teammates if I’m still worried about contract negotiations and whatnot. And I feel like I owe that to them—to be 100 percent, 1000 percent balled in at all times. Because at any point, something bad could happen.”

Despite the bad result for the Panthers from their season-opening loss to the Atlanta Falcons, Burns kicked off the campaign with a bang (or two) in Week 1. He totaled seven tackles, (the second-most of any Carolina defender), two sacks and a forced fumble.

Burns, even despite his intent to stay focused on the field, was then asked if he’d revisit negotiations at some point later this year.

“If it made sense to,” he replied “After conversations with my team and whatnot—if that’s what makes sense, then we’ll cross that road once we get there. But as of right now, I’m all for my teammates and my coaches.”
