Brian Brobbey's view on Man Utd transfer hijack attempt after Erik ten Hag phone call

Brian Brobbey has previously suggested he would be open to a Manchester United move as the club look to hijack a deal for the Dutch starlet.

Brobbey is expected to leave RB Leipzig this summer, with Ajax in the mix for the 20-year-old. However, amid reports of a phone call from United boss Erik ten Hag, the Red Devils could yet steal a march.

The striker, who has represented the Netherlands at age-group level, was given his senior debut by Ten Hag back in 2020. After moving to Leipzig when his contract expired a few months later, he returned on loan last season and helped Ajax win the Eredivisie title.

According to German outlet Bild, Brobbey is 'totally open' to the idea of a United move. He will reportedly be available for a fee in the region of £13million, just a year after arriving in the Bundesliga on a free transfer.

Back in April, when Ten Hag's move from Ajax to United was confirmed, the striker joked about following his manager to England. However, that joke could soon become a reality.

"I am very happy for him and he really deserves it after everything he has done for Ajax," Brobbey said at the time. "If only he brings me with him in two years... No, no, joking, joking!"

Brobbey was just 18 years old when he scored on debut for Ajax in a victory over Fortuna Sittard. He ended his debut season with six goals, despite 17 of his 19 appearances coming as a substitute.

Things were tougher in Leipzig, though, with the team struggling under former manager Jesse Marsch and Brobbey failing to find the net. A return to Amsterdam helped, though, with three goals in his last three games helping cement a record of seven in 12 appearances for Ten Hag's team last season.

United's search for attacking reinforcements comes at a time when Cristiano Ronaldo's Old Trafford future is shrouded in doubt. The 37-year-old is not involved in the pre-season tour, with family reasons cited, and he has reportedly made it clear he wants to move on after the team failed to qualify for this season's Champions League.

Ten Hag's side are also in danger of losing young forward Facundo Pellistri. The Uruguayan is keen to play regular football with a place at the World Cup at stake.

Ajax, meanwhile, have been busy themselves this summer. The Dutch champions have agreed a deal to sell striker Sebastien Haller to Borussia Dortmund, while Netherlands international Steven Bergwijn has joined from Tottenham in a deal worth around £26m.
