Bret Easton Ellis to Direct First Horror Film, Relapse.

Blumhouse's New Horror Film Imaginary Unveils Menacing Trailer and Cast

Renowned American author Bret Easton Ellis is venturing into the world of film as he prepares to make his directorial debut with 'Relapse,' an elevated horror film that he himself has written. The project features Joseph Quinn, known for his breakout role in the hit series 'Stranger Things,' as the lead. Backed by Paris-based SND, along with Adrian Guerra's Nostromo and Simon Wallon's Kiss & Kill, 'Relapse' is set to captivate audiences with its chilling storyline.

Taking on the roles of producer and worldwide sales handler, SND will also be responsible for French distribution of the film. To build anticipation for the project, SND plans to showcase an exclusive sizzle reel during the European Film Market (EFM). In addition to 'Relapse,' Quinn is set to appear in 'A Quiet Place: Day One' and the upcoming sequel to 'Gladiator.'

In 'Relapse,' Quinn portrays the character of Matt Cullen, who seeks solace in rehab after witnessing a horrifying death at a drug-fueled party. Upon leaving rehab three months later, Matt moves into his parents' luxurious mansion in the hills of Los Angeles, hoping to rebuild his life. However, it becomes evident that something has shifted, leaving Matt feeling unbalanced and increasingly paranoid. Fueling his instability is the invasive power of social media, further derailing his rehabilitation efforts. As Matt falls back into substance abuse, a mysterious presence emerges, one that has haunted him since his teenage years. Faced with this malevolent force, Matt's therapist believes it to be a figment of his imagination, but the truth may be far more chilling.

Author Bret Easton Ellis, whose books have been published and loved across the globe, has long flirted with the movie industry. His iconic works, including 'American Psycho' and 'The Rules of Attraction,' have been successfully adapted for the screen. Ellis's most recent novel, 'The Shards,' a semi-autobiographical tale about a serial killer, has already been optioned by HBO for a miniseries. Notably, Ellis has also penned four films, including 'The Canyons' in 2013 and 'Smiley Face Killers' in 2020.

Reflecting on his directorial debut, Ellis shared his connection to horror movies from the 1970s, a time that left a lasting impression on him. Drawing inspiration from his horror novel, 'Lunar Park,' which pays homage to Stephen King, Ellis finds 'Relapse' to be a fitting choice for his first foray into directing. The simplicity and impact of the film align with his vision, allowing him to delve into familiar themes such as sex, drugs, and paranoia. Ellis assures audiences that 'Relapse' will be an enjoyable, cinematic experience, infused with his signature touches.

Rammy Nahas, head of international sales at SND, describes 'Relapse' as a unique blend of Bret Easton Ellis's distinct perspective and the look and feel of the horror genre. The film combines the elements the author is known for within a gripping monster feature that promises to captivate audiences. Producer Simon Wallon emphasizes Ellis's distinctive voice and vision as a writer, expressing excitement about collaborating on 'Relapse.'

Bringing their expertise to the project, SND producer Nicolas Rolland envisions a visually striking film that echoes the likes of 'The Thing,' 'Pan's Labyrinth,' 'The Host,' and 'Alien.' To bring the terrifying creature in 'Relapse' to life, the film has enlisted the talents of DDT Studios, an Oscar-nominated VFX banner with three decades of experience in creating fantastic creatures that haunt viewers' nightmares.

With a pedigree team of creatives and an intriguing storyline led by rising star Joseph Quinn, 'Relapse' is poised to thrill audiences with its unique blend of horror, psychological suspense, and social commentary. As Bret Easton Ellis transitions from acclaimed author to film director, fans eagerly await the release of this highly anticipated debut feature.
