Brentford vs Tottenham LIVE: Premier League results and reaction as Spurs secure much-needed win

Tottenham ended their winless streak in the Premier League with a 2-0 victory over Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Spurs, who came into the match on a seven-match winless run, were under pressure to perform and for large parts of the match were second best. Brentford were the greater attacking force and Tottenham’s dogged defence limited the space and chances of the hosts.

The opener came from a set piece. Heung-Min Son swung a corner into the box and Spurs went ahead as a deflection off the back of Vitaly Janelt sent the ball over the line.

With a lead to protect, Tottenham dug in and used the pace of Son and Richarlison to get them up the pitch and relieve pressure. In the closing minute Pape Matar Sarr decided the match with a goal of his own as Spurs doubled their lead.

Ange Postecoglou’s side jump up to 14th and can take heart from a pleasing performance.

Tottenham end winless run to ease pressure on Ange Postecoglou

16:35 , Mike Jones

Tottenham ended a winless run of seven Premier League matches as they beat Brentford 2-0 at Gtech Community Stadium.

Spurs, who were also on a run of four successive league losses, gained a much-needed three points on a day where captain Son Heung-min played a part in both goals.

The forward’s corner led to Vitaly Janelt’s 29th-minute own goal before Pape Sarr’s late strike gave Ange Postecoglou some relief as Spurs moved up to 14th.

Unbeaten Spurs

16:26 , Mike Jones

Tottenham remain unbeaten against Brentford under Ange Postecoglou (P4 W3 D1) – one of only two opponents they’ve faced as many as four times without losing (also W3 D1 v Manchester United).

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou:

16:26 , Mike Jones

"It is a difficult place to come and win at.

"It’s also a difficult place to win with the way they attack and set up; you have to defend your box. You’re just going to have to do that.

"I thought the lads handled that awfully well and we knew it was going to be key for us and the lads were brilliant and we felt we had the quality of football to hurt them the other way. Credit to the boys, they were brilliant."

Frank on pressure Postecoglou is under

12:40 , Mike Jones

The Brentford manager also said he can relate to the pressure on Ange Postecoglou and explained how the manager must make the big calls.

Frank added: "I have massive respect for Ange. Speaking for myself, it is tough at times and feels like you're carrying everything on your shoulders.

"It is always my final call, it's the manager who stands there. That's why I can definitely put myself in his place.

"He's done very well to keep going and keep believing.

"Maybe, in one of his toughest moments, they will win a trophy, which will be massive for Tottenham. It could be one of those seasons where they suffer incredibly - and maybe they suffer even more - but they win a trophy."

Thomas Frank on Tottenham's crisis

12:35 , Mike Jones

Thomas Frank was asked what it will be like to face Tottenham today during their poor run of form.

"We were also hit very hard by injuries last year so, from that perspective, I understand the situation Ange is in now at Tottenham," said the Bees boss.

"When results are also not going your way, that's tough. They're things we need to deal with as managers and I'm convinced that Ange is doing that well and he will get through it.

"He doesn't need advice, but he just needs to trust his own processes and trust what he believes in, which he does - that's the main thing.

"When we played Tottenham away earlier this season, we played a very, very good Tottenham team - I thought they were flying. When they hit their high level, they are very hard to play against.

"I expect a game between two teams that want to attack, so it could be open at times. We need to be the team that controls an open game, which is difficult."

He clipped the post with an initial attempt but was given another chance after VAR determined Eagles captain Marc Guehi had encroached.

Mbeumo was on target with his second attempt, breaking the deadlock in the 66th minute, before Kevin Schade nodded in a second 10 minutes from time.
