Brentford striker Ivan Toney breaks silence after FA release report of betting breaches

Ivan Toney has broken his silence after the FA released the full report, which described him as a gambling addict, of his betting breaches which saw him receive an eight-month ban from footballing activity. The Brentford striker was charged with 262 betting breaches but only 232 were upheld, which also saw him handed a £50,000 fine for his conduct.

The ban will see him placed on the sidelines until January 2024 and only be able to return to team training in September. Following the initial news of his ban, Toney wrote on twitter: "Today I have received notification of my eight-month ban from football following a hearing before an FA Regulatory Commission that took place yesterday. I am naturally disappointed that I will be unable to play for the next eight months.

"The written reasons for the Commission's decision have not yet been published, so I make no further comment at this point other than to thank my family and friends, Brentford FC and our fans for their continued support, through what has been a very difficult time. I now focus on returning to play the game I love next season."

Those written reasons have now been released to which Toney has simply responded by saying, "I’ll speak soon with no filter."

The full FA report outlines in great detail each individual betting charge revealing that "126 bets were in respect of matches in a competition in which Mr Toney’s club had participated in or were eligible to participate in that particular season."

Twenty-nine of the 126 bets were made, "in respect of the club that Mr Toney was registered with or on loan with at the time". On 16 occasions bets were placed in favour of Toney's team at the time with 15 of those for his club to win the game. The remaining 13 bets were on the 27-year-old's own team to lose in seven different matches between 22 August 2017 and 3 March 2018. It is stressed, however, that Toney did not play in any of those matches where he placed bets against his loan club as he was not in the match squad or against his parent club as he was on loan.

Prior to the confirmation of his ban, Toney had been linked with a transfer to Chelsea to solve their noticeable scoring struggles and has previously been called up to the England squad by Gareth Southgate.
