Brentford’s Ivan Toney convicted and fined over driving offences in £160,000 Mercedes

Brentford striker Ivan Toney has been fined a legal bill of almost £700 after he was caught by police driving with dangerously-tinted windows and an illegal personalised number plate on his £160,000 Mercedes.

The 26-year-old Premier League star was accused of being “rude and obstructive” at the roadside when he was pulled over by an officer on April 2.

The Met Police PC accused Toney of “not caring” about the traffic stop and offences he was suspected of.

At Bromley magistrates court last Thursday, Toney was convicted of using a vehicle in a condition likely to cause danger of injury and driving a vehicle when the registration mark failed to conform with regulations.

He was ordered to pay fines totalling £540, plus a £54 victim surcharge and £100 in costs. The Premier League footballer was also given three penalty points on his licence.

In written evidence, the court was told how his green G-class SUV was pulled over on the A4 in Chiswick after PC George Anckorn spotted possible infringements.

The driver and passenger-side windows of the car were so heavily tinted that just five per cent of natural light was detected inside the vehicle.

Toney’s personalised number plate bearing his name, IVAN, and his shirt number, 17, also broke DVLA rules.

“The driver’s attitude was poor. He was rude and obstructive to police. He did not care”, said PC Anckorn.

Toney did not enter pleas to either charge, and was convicted in his absence in a behind-closed-doors court hearing.

The former Northampton Town and Newcastle striker, who missed out on selection for England’s 2022 England World Cup squad, was charged last month by the Football Association with 232 alleged betting offences.

He has been in prolific form for Brentford this season, with ten goals in 14 Premier League games so far.

An agent for Toney was contacted by the Evening Standard for comment on the court case.
