Brenden Aaronson 'willing to take Leeds United risk' ahead of 2022 Qatar World Cup

Brenden Aaronson reckons signing for Leeds United will help him take his game to the next level ahead of the World Cup in Qatar later this year. Aaronson joined the Whites last week from Red Bull Salzburg for £25m, signing a five-year-deal at Elland Road.

He previously worked with Leeds boss Jesse Marsch at Salzburg, before the latter moved on to the Austrian sides sister club RB Leipzig. Leeds will hope that the American international can add some attacking impetus to their frontline which looked toothless at times during their Premier League run in.

But while Leeds' season is over, Aaronson's is still going, with the 21-year-old set to play a part in the USA's June internationals against Morocco, Uruguay, Grenada and El Salvador. Despite his youth, the midfielder has already picked up 18 international caps, scoring five goals for the USA.

November's World Cup is now hurtling down the track with Aaronson keen to impress manager Gregg Berhalter in the upcoming friendlies. It will be the last time the new Leeds man will be able to do so before Berhalter names his squad later this year for Qatar.

And ahead of the winter World Cup, Aaronson believes the decision to play in the Premier League with Leeds can only be a good thing for his game, which he hopes to take to the next level.

“I think you have to play well for your country, but I think it’s also playing consistently week in, week out for your club,” Aaronson told ESPN.

“But for me, it’s it was a step I wanted to take. I thought it was the right time to up my game by going to the Premier League. And yeah, it’s definitely a risk, but it was a risk I was willing to take.”
