Brendan Rodgers set for eye-watering pay day if Leicester sack under-pressure manager

Brendan Rodgers is on the brink - but it could cost Leicester more than £10 million to axe their manager.

Just one point from seven games - and six consecutive defeats - have left Rodgers facing the sack and admitting he is unsure if he will still be in charge at the King Power after the international break.

The 6-2 defeat at Tottenham, following a 5-2 hiding at Brighton in their previous game, is likely to spell the end of the road for 49-year-old Rodgers. But the Foxes boss has almost three years left to run on his £200,000-a-week contract, which expires in 2025.

And his severance pay could run into eight figures if chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha decides to pull the plug before Leicester's basement battle with fellow East Midlands strugglers Nottingham Forest on October 3.

Rodgers has always enjoyed a cordial relationship with the King Power owners and he admitted: "Whatever their decision is, I will always respect it. The owners will do what it is they feel they need to do.

"I'm not daft, I know football, and the last six games don't make great reading. But I have every confidence the team can push on and climb the table. I come in every day and do my work, but you've got to win games. I understand the frustrations of supporters and I can't hide from that. It's my responsibility."

Brentford's highly-rated head coach Thomas Frank and Sean Dyche, jettisoned by Burnley five months ago after working miracles on a shoestring for a decade at Turf Moor, would be prominent on Leicester's shortlist if they call time on Rodgers.

Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp believes Leicester will part company with Rodgers in the near future. "It’s not just that result," he told Sky Sports. "It’s been tough for him. He didn’t get backed in the window. There are factors they have to look at, but when I see him speak then, he looks resigned to changes.

"Leicester got rid of Claudio Ranieri six months after they won the league and I just have a feeling something may happen there. I’ve got no doubt, even if they do change it, he’ll be successful somewhere else."

Leicester midfielder James Maddison defended Rodgers after Saturday's defeat. He told Sky Sports: "It’s a collective, it’s not the manager.

"We’re the 11 out there. It’s painful and it hurts when you see a manager who you’ve got a lot of respect for and you’ve built up a relationship with get so much heat and so much negativity when ultimately we’re the players that have to do the business and we haven’t been of late. That hurts us."

Rodgers was appointed Leicester manager in February 2019 and has enjoyed considerable success. He led them to back-to-back fifth-placed finishes in the Premier League - narrowly missing out on Champions League football on both occasions - and has won the FA Cup and Community Shield.
