Brendan Rodgers reveals Leicester City plan Youri Tielemans did not follow against Tottenham

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers has revealed that Youri Tielemans did not follow their plan from kick-off following Steven Bergwijn's late equaliser.

Looking on course for all three points after James Maddison had put them 2-1 up 14 minutes from the end, Tottenham, who had numerous chances throughout the 90 minutes, levelled in the last minute of stoppage time through Bergwijn.

Appearing to have rescued a point from the jaws of defeat and also keep Antonio Conte's unbeaten run as Spurs head coach in the Premier League intact, the Dutchman netted a stunning winner 79 seconds after his equaliser to cap off a remarkable comeback.

The goal came about after Leicester midfielder Tielemans uncharacteristically gave the ball away from kick-off, with Harry Kane subsequently threading through a pinpoint ball for Bergwijn to collect and find the net after rounding Kasper Schmeichel.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Rodgers confirmed that Leicester's plan from kick-off after conceding is to try and catch the opposition napping with a long ball over the top, something which has worked for them on a couple of occasions this season against Leeds United and Manchester United.

However, Tielemans decided against that and it proved rather costly indeed.

“It’s very disappointing. The last 90 seconds spoiled 93 minutes of really good work," said Rodgers in his post-match press conference, as reported by Leicestershire Live.

“You know you have to defend well with the quality they have.

“We scored two really good goals, but we conceded a disappointing equaliser, losing the duels we should have won.

“Then we were really really naive from the kick-off to concede so late in the game.

“There were lots of really good moments, but we gift-wrapped the goals, which you can’t do.

“Normally if a team does score, we go direct to see if we can catch the backline celebrating, we did it against Leeds, we did it against Manchester United, and in other games.

“You certainly don’t run through the middle of the pitch. Youri, he knows that. He was keen to get the ball forward as quickly as possible.

“That’s one with more experience, you have to settle for a point.”
