Brendan Rodgers namechecks the unseen Celtic coach aiding Daizen Maeda's rise

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers yesterday namechecked the lesser-known coach aiding Daizen Maeda's rise.

The Japanese attacker has been in fine fettle of late and hit 30 goals for the season in his side's 3-0 win over Heart of Midlothian last weekend.

Since Kyogo Furuhashi's mid-season departure and Maeda's resultant more frequent deployment through the middle, his form has taken the most dramatic of upturns.

Speaking ahead of Celtic's trip to face St Johnstone this weekend, Rodgers lifted the lid on Maeda and how analyst Jack Lyons has played a key role behind the scenes: "There's a wee bit of everything there, really," said the Celtic boss.

"I think that he [Maeda] works closely with Jack Lyons here, one of our young coaches. He'll focus individually on some of the details on that.

"His ability to learn is also what has helped him. He gets pointed out items with all the coaches, and we'll speak to him as a manager. Jack will do specific stuff with him as well."

Lyons joined Celtic during Rodgers' first spell in charge.

He then followed the 52-year-old to Leicester City in 2019 and now finds himself back at Parkhead.

Namechecked by James Maddison in an on-air TV interview, Lyons has a respectable repertoire with any group of players he's worked with: "I brought in Jack as a really young, talented coach who is analytically brilliant," said Rodgers in 2023.

"He can analyse and present that to players too."
