Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers knows the magnitude of tonight’s UEFA Champions League knockout stage first-leg against Bayern Munich.
It’s 12 years since Celtic Park last hosted a fixture at this stage of Europe’s elite competition. And the task Celtic have to conquer Vincent Kompany’s star-studded side over two legs is there for everyone to see.
But Rodgers feels that his current Celtic squad are in a better place to tackle such opposition than some of his predecessors as he credited the board's backing.
"It's been such a long time [since Celtic made it out of the group stage]," he told TNT Sports. "You go back to Stiliyan's era and they had some amazing nights in Europe. But for us, the reality is probably our squad over the last decade or so, probably hasn't been strong enough to be competitive.
"The club have been great in helping us to build a squad that allows us to be competitive at this level. And I think now our aim over the coming years is to be a seasoned club at this level. For that it's just about step by step building and this season has been a good one for that."
