Brendan Fraser recalls the scary moment he almost died on the set of The Mummy

Brendan Fraser has revealed the moment he almost died while filming his hit movie The Mummy.

The actor, 54, found huge success on the film, which was released in 1999, but filming almost ended in disaster when he was nearly choked out.

Opening up on the frightening ordeal, Brendan told Kelly Clarkson on The Kelly Clarkson Show he was "choked out accidentally" during a hanging sequence.

She quickly replied: "I know what you're talking about! I didn't know that that had actually happened."

As the scene played behind the paid, Brendan jokingly wiped his eyes as the singer asked: "Like, what happened?"

The actor went on to reveal: "I was standing on my toes like this [stands on the table] with the rope and you only got so far to go. [Director] Stephen [Sommer] ran over and he said, ‘Hey, it doesn’t really look like your choking. Can you sell it?'"

Going for another take, he added: "The camera swooped around and I went up on the toes and the guy holding the rope above me, he pulled it up a little higher and I was stuck on my toes and I had nowhere to go but down.

"So he was pulling up and I was going down. And then the next thing I knew, my elbow was in my ear, the world was sideways and there was gravel in my teeth."

He said how he realised everyone had went quiet and the coordinator tried to wake him up. After successfully doing so, he was told: "Congratulations, you’re in the club – same thing happened to Mel Gibson on Braveheart."

But Brendan wasn't sure how to react to almost losing consciousness during filming, joking he wanted to go home at the time.

Kelly responded: "I would've been like, 'the acting is fine. I'm not choking for you'."

Brendan, who has enjoyed a successful career, recently won a SAG Award for outstanding performance by a male leading actor for his portrayal in The Whale.

In his passionate acceptance speech he praised SAG for his 'acceptance' back in 1991 and used his speech to spur on fellow actors who may be struggling in the industry adding: "I know how you feel."

Holding out his award from the podium, he told the audience: “I will treasure this, but never more than what I treasured – what I used to keep in my wallet, which was my SAG card that I earned in 1991," he said.

"It made me feel like I belong. As actors we all want to belong to a tribe and that’s when I found where I belonged. If you told that guy back then, that I’d be standing here – I would not have believed you."
