The Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, is recuperating with family after undergoing an operation following a breast cancer diagnosis.
The 63-year-old, formerly married to Prince Andrew, received the news of her diagnosis following a routine mammogram screening. The spokesperson added that the prognosis is good, with Fergie now at home recuperating with family.
A spokesperson for the duchess confirmed the royal required surgery and is now recovering, saying: "She was advised she needed to undergo surgery which has taken place successfully."
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the Scotland, with eight out of 10 women diagnosed over the age of 50, according to NHS Inform.
However, there are rare cases in younger women, with men also able to get breast cancer. In Scotland, around 1,000 women and people assigned female at birth die of breast cancer every year.
Early diagnosis, before the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, can help when it comes to treatment and survival rates, so knowing the signs to look out for is vital.
What are the symptom of breast cancer?
According to NHS Inform, the symptoms of breast cancer include:
- a lump or area of thickened tissue in either breast
- a change in the size or shape of one or both breasts
- discharge from either of your nipples (which may be streaked with blood)
- a lump or swelling in either of your armpits
- dimpling on the skin of your breasts
- a rash on or around your nipple
- a change in the appearance of your nipple, such as becoming sunken into your breast
