William Saliba injury fears grow as Arsenal star withdraws from France squad

The French Football Federation have confirmed that Arsenal star William Saliba has been withdrawn from the France national team squad for the upcoming March international break. The youngster was originally named within the side that start their qualification campaign for the 2024 European Championships.

Les Bleus face France and Ireland next week in hopes of lining up in Germany next year, but will have to do so without Saliba in their camp. It comes as Mikel Arteta is sweating over the fitness of the youngster after an injury concern in midweek against Sporting CP in the Europa League.

The issue was in the opening stages of the clash, holding his back as the Spaniard decided to substitute the defender shortly afterwards. Saliba wasn't involved in the win over Crystal Palace on Sunday, with Rob Holding eventually taking his place in the first-team.

Arteta revealed when the Gunners would learn more about a potential return after the clash, telling reporters: "We hope Willy [Saliba] is going to be better news. Again We have to wait to tomorrow to get a better picture."

It remains to be seen when the key defender will return to action after the international break, with Arsenal next back in action against Leeds United on April 1. The clash after that is a huge one too, with a trip to Liverpool on the cards for the Gunners, where the title race could take a huge turn.

The current gap to Manchester City sits at eight points, with the Citizens holding a game in hand as well as a head-to-head tie before the end of the campaign. Arteta will be hopeful that for the final few months of the campaign will have as many of his players available to him as possible.
