Wesley Fofana had to be substituted during Chelsea's friendly against Brentford as the French defender made his return from injury ahead of the resumption of the Premier League. The former Leicester star picked up a knee injury in the clash that took place behind closed doors, football.london understands.
The match took place on Tuesday as Fofana looked to continue his recovery, alongside teammates such as Reece James, having not featured for the Blues after suffering a knee injury against AC Milan in October. Chelsea ran out 5-1 winners during the clash, with a hat-trick from Kai Havertz over three sets of 45 minutes.
However, the knee injury to Fofana comes as a blow before the return to action. The severity of the issue is yet to be discovered, though there is concern within the Blues camp.

The 22-year-old headed to Dubai in November to aid his rehabilitation and also joined Chelsea's squad in Abu Dhabi in recent weeks, though did not feature in Chelsea's friendly against Aston Villa. Fofana had been looking forward to returning to action and believed he would be ready for Bournemouth in Chelsea's first game back.
He said: "Bournemouth is a very important game as it is the season's restart, it's important for the club. The team is ready to push harder in the second part of the season. I am feeling good and I am ready for action."
An instagram post from his team said: "Wesley Fofana was again injured in a behind-the-scenes game against Brentford. The severity of his injury is not yet known. Courage Wesley, we are with you in this extremely difficult new ordeal."
