'Turkish Simon Cowell' completes takeover of Championship club Hull City

Championship strugglers Hull City have a new owner in the shape of Acun Ilicali.

Businessman Ilicali - a popular media personality in his homeland who has been christened by some as the 'Turkish Simon Cowell' - has completed a buy-out of the club's current owners, the Allam family.

Ilicali had been in talks since June having first visited the city a month earlier.

It had been hoped the takeover would be completed before Christmas, but there has been a slight delay in getting the deal over the line.

Ilicali recently visited Hull to watched their FA Cup third round defeat to Everton.

Can Hull avoid relegation under their new owner? Let us know in the comments

The news was first made public on New Year's Eve, when Ilicali confirmed on O Ses Türkiye (The Voice in Turkey) - sending the Championship club’s Instagram account into meltdown as fans look forward to a fresh start.

The Tigers are hoping that a new fanbase can be attracted due to the takeover by Ilicali. The purchase ends the Allams' 11-year reign of the East Yorkshire club, during which time the club experienced both highs and lows.

There were two promotions to the Premier League, a first-ever FA Cup final appearance and a first-ever tilt at European football.

But under their stewardship the club have been relegated three times whilst two unsuccessful attempts to change the club's name went down like a lead balloon with the fanbase.

Hull are in their first season back in the Championship and are currently just four points clear of the relegation zone.

Speaking to our colleagues at Hull Live after watching the Everton tie from the directors' box, Ilicali said: “I wanted to know how it felt to be there, and again I got more than I was expecting, of course.

"What I know is that the stadium isn’t as full (for Championship games) for regular games, and make this atmosphere the same I think it’s going to be a big driving force to help the team get higher in the league.

“I would expect our supporters to support the team because as I’ve said before, they are a key part of the club and we want to make good things happen for them, we are a family and we need their support.

“It was a fantastic atmosphere, but I want this level of support throughout the season.”

Official confirmation of the 52-year-old's purchase is expected to be announced by the English Football League later on Wednesday afternoon.

The Tigers are in action later tonight, with a home game against Blackburn Rovers, where there is sure to be a carnival-esque atmosphere inside the MKM Stadium as fans toast a fresh new era.

Grant McCann's side are winless in their last six games in all competitions.
