Tottenham qualify for Champions League round of 16 after sensational 2-1 win against Marseille

Tottenham have qualified for the Champions League round of 16 after a 2-1 win against Marseille in the group stages secured their place as Clement Lenglet's header cancelled out Chancel Mbemba's opener before Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg won the game. It comes after a tense build-up to the game, where the side could finish anywhere from first to third in the group, depending on the result.

The challenge was tough enough for the visitors as a number of injury issues piled up, along with boss Antonio Conte being banned after a red card against Sporting CP last time out. The home fans attempted to give their club the edge by setting off fireworks outside the Tottenham team hotel in the early hours of Tuesday morning - looking to disrupt their sleep.

The first half was a struggle for Spurs, who were hit hard by the loss of Son Heung-Min, with the forward being substituted after a head injury in the first-half for a clash with Mbemba. The South Korean looked visibly distressed, with swelling appearing on his face as he was helped down the tunnel.

As they looked to be going into the break on level terms, Mbemba opened the scoring with a header from a short corner routine to send the home fans into raptures. That didn't last long in the second half, though, as Lenglet was on the end of an Ivan Perisic cross to equalise.

A draw was enough for Spurs to confirm their place, but the game ended up being frantic in the dying embers as Sead Kolasinac missed a free header. That ended up being costly as the away side confirmed their status as group winners when Hojbjerg scored on the break.

In a dramatic twist of events, the French side went from being through in the Champions League to dropping out of Europe altogether. As for Spurs, they will be pleased to be in the next phase after a nervous evening in France.
