Tottenham confirm Rodrigo Bentancur to undergo surgery after suffering ACL injury

Tottenham have confirmed that Rodrigo Bentancur will miss the remainder of the season after suffering an ACL injury in the Premier League defeat to Leicester City on Saturday.

The midfielder was involved in a clash with Nampalys Mendy and immediately fell to the ground in severe pain. Spurs' medical staff were quick to treat the Uruguayan before he managed to limp off at the King Power Stadium.

It's another blow to Antonio Conte after Yves Bissouma was forced to have surgery on a stress fracture to his ankle and captain Hugo Lloris damaged a ligament in the 1-0 win over Manchester City.

A statement on the club website read: "We can confirm that Rodrigo Bentancur has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and will be out of action for the remainder of the campaign.

"The midfielder will undergo surgery before beginning his rehabilitation with our medical staff."

Bentancur’s injury hands Conte a severe blow for tomorrow’s Champions League last-16 tie at AC Milan. Spurs will now be without Bissouma, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Bentancur for the trip to San Siro meaning Oliver Skipp and Pape Matar Sarr are likely to start.

The midfielder has been a key figure in Conte's squad since arriving at the start of 2022. Bentancur has been a mainstay in midfield and has often popped up with crucial goals this season, including dramatic winners against Bournemouth and Leeds United.

However, with the January window now closed, the news of the ACL injury leaves Spurs thin in the middle ahead of a crucial two-legged tie in the Champions League and in the race for a top four finish.
