Hugo Lloris signs new Tottenham contract as Antonio Conte transfer plans take shape

Tottenham have announced that captain Hugo Lloris has signed a new two and a half year contract with the club, which will keep him at the club until 2024.

The 35-year-old's original contract was set to expire in the summer and fans have been hoping that the World Cup winner would be offered a new one, to keep him in N17 for a while longer.

Lloris joined Spurs in 2012 and has become a pivotal part of the Tottenham team, consistently making crucial saves for his side.

This season has been no different and in his 19 Premier League appearances the shot stopper has already made 51 saves and kept eight clean sheets.

The new contract has been a long time coming and after Tottenham's 1-0 victory over Watford on New Years Day, Antonio Conte was asked whether Lloris' crucial part in the game was an indication that the Italian wanted him to remain in N17.

"Yeah for sure but you can see the level of the keeper in these circumstances," the 52-year-old explained. "When for the whole game he didn't make a save but he continued to be focused. To be focused for the team, for me that's very important.

"When I speak with him and when I speak to the team, the link between the keeper and the team must be very important. It's very important especially when you defend very high, with a defensive line.

"For us, he's [Lloris] very important and I'm sure that in a short time they can find a solution with the club, because he loves Tottenham and Tottenham loves him," Conte added.

football.london reported this month that talks had begun regarding a new contract for the French international, with the skipper keen to stay - and there were believed to be modest demands from him, which were seen as reasonable by the club.

The contract has now been signed and it will be a deal that fans will be very pleased about, with Lloris arguably being one of the most consistent Spurs players in recent times.

"It's a privilege to play for such a big club. I decided to continue the story," Lloris said.

The shot stopper has made nearly 400 appearances since his arrival to north London, from Lyon, in the summer of 2012, making him the 14th in Tottenham's all-time appearance list.

Lloris broke the record of the first player to make 300 Premier League appearances for the Lilywhites and since he returned from his dislocated elbow in 2019, he has come back better than ever.

The club captain also plays a big part for his country, who he is also captain for and in 2018, Lloris became the first Tottenham player to win the World Cup.

He has now made 136 appearances for France, leading them in five major tournaments and was the skipper in Spurs' Champions League final game in 2019.

Lloris has been a fan favourite for a number of years and everyone at the club will be happy to see him stay for at least another couple of year.
