In a bit of a surprise move, the Detroit Lions are releasing kicker Michael Badgley. Tom Pelissero of NFL.com was the first to report the news, which has been confirmed by other sources.
Badgley was the Lions kicker for the final 12 games of the 2022 season. He made 20-of-24 field goal attempts and was a perfect 33-of-33 on extra points. The “Money Badger” was one of three kickers currently on the Lions roster along with John Parker Romo and Riley Patterson.
The move was necessitated to clear a roster spot for new wide receiver Denzel Mims, who was acquired via trade on Tuesday.
Badgley is not subject to waivers, so he is now an unrestricted free agent. He could return to Detroit and sign a new contract, as well.
