Taylor Swift announces new album as she wins two awards in surprise MTV VMA appearance

Taylor Swift surprised her fans with a stunning appearance at this year's MTV VMAs in New Jersey - as she bagged a number of gongs and even announced a brand new album is on its way.

She looked amazing in a sparkly short mesh-like dress paired with her bold red lipstick and was compared to a "real life mirrorball". Originally, fans didn't expect the singer to show up as she's busy with other projects, but she wasn't prepared to let her loyal followers down.

Tay-Tay, 32, was up for five awards at the annual event and ended up going home with two - Best Longform Video and Video of the Year.

She dazzled in a jewelled Oscar de la Renta cutout dress and sent fans into a frenzy after announcing her new album is due out on October 21 during her Video of the Year acceptance speech.

Fans had originally flocked to social media after spotting her on the red carpet to share their delight. One Twitter user gushed: "TAYLOR SWIFT AT THE VMAs I'M FREAKING OUT."

Another seemed to share the same emotions, writing in response to MTV's post showing the star: "I’m freaking out."

And it was all guns blazing once again after her surprise album announcement. She told her adoring fans during her speech: "We wouldn't have been able to make this short film if it weren't for you, the fans."

Following her words, another fan gushed: "TAYLOR SWIFT NEW ALBUM OCTOBER 21st SCREAMING CRYING THROWING UP RN."

Many others had similar responses, with one writing: "THIS IS NOT A DRILL, TAYLOR SWIFT WILL RELEASE A BRAND NEW ALBUM ON OCTOBER 21ST!!!!!

Shortly after she was nominated for the awards in July, the singer took to TikTok to thank her fans for their support. She uploaded a video saying: ""All is, yet again, all too unwell. Thanks to you!!! Voting is open NOW!"

She shared shots of her nominations in the clip and added a further message to her loyal supporters. In one slide she wrote: "LOVE YOU SADIE & DYLAN," in a reference to Sadie Sink and Dylan O'Brien who appeared in the short film version of the song.

She is currently a two-time winner of Video of the Year and will make history if she wins it again, becoming the only artist ever to do so.
