Six people have died and 81 residents are injured after a blaze tore through a retirement home in Italy.
Two of the injured have been left in critical condition as emergency responders rushed them to local hospitals in Milan.
An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the inferno at the Retirement Home for Spouses on the Via dei Cinquecento in the southwestern suburbs of the city.
Milanese outlet Il Giorno said those injured were around the age of 80.
Local officials confirmed the fatal victims were five women, aged 75, 84 and 85 and one man, aged 73.
Two of the females were charred to death, while three other women and one man died of smoke inhalation.
The mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, told local media that the fire originated in a single room on the first floor of the building.
Il Giorno reported that the two women who were burned to death were residents of that room.
The others died as a result of the toxic fumes, which are "just as deadly", according to Mayor Sala.
The incident triggered a large emergency response, including 11 ambulances and a fire engine.
The elderly guests who were residing in parts of the building now deemed unliveable have been moved to nearby nursing homes.
In the UK last year, a woman was arrested on suspicion of arson after seven people had to be rushed to hospital after a huge fire broke out at a car home.
More than half a dozen fire engines battled the blaze in Middlesbrough, Teesside.
Firefighters tackled the flames at Victoria House Care Centre, and police were quick to take a woman into custody hours after the fire was eventually put out.
Six residents were rushed to the James Cook hospital for smoke inhalation, TeessideLive reports.
The home provides nursing and residential care for 68 people across three units.
Cleveland Police released a statement confirming an arrest has been made.
