Sir Alex Ferguson follows Cristiano Ronaldo through the door for Man Utd crunch talks

Sir Alex Ferguson has arrived at Manchester United's Carrington training base as Cristiano Ronaldo prepares for crunch talks with new boss Erik ten Hag over his future.

It is not clear whether the legendary United manager will be involved in the meeting after Ronaldo stunned the club by announcing he wants to leave Old Trafford this summer and join a side competing in the Champions League.

Ronaldo is yet to train with the Red Devils this summer and didn't accompany his teammates on their pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia due to personal reasons. He arrived at Carrington at 11am on Tuesday alongside his agent Jorge Mendes.

Ferguson pulled up outside Carrington just five minutes later, 50 minutes after Ten Hag arrived this morning to prepare for a busy day ahead.

Ferguson played a huge role in ensuring Ronaldo snubbed rivals Manchester City last summer in favour of a fairytale return to United.

Ronaldo was expected to join Pep Guardiola's side after leaving Juventus, but Ferguson called him at the eleventh hour and convinced him to change his mind.

Ferguson's presence at Carrington on an important day for the future of Man United is likely to split opinion among Red Devils fans.

On one hand, United is looking to move on from the Ferguson era that, while extremely successful, is now in the past, and find a new identity under Ten Hag.

On the other, Ferguson has previous experience in negotiating with Ronaldo, having initially prevented him from leaving Manchester United to join Real Marid in 2008 before later sanctioning the deal.

Ten Hag will be keen to find a solution to his Ronaldo problem by the end of the day, and either announce the player is committed to the club or search for a replacement.

Ronaldo, though, has struggled to convince a suitor to come in for him in recent weeks with Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid all looking the other way.

Real Madrid's bitter rivals Barcelona have shown meek interest in the forward, but it is very unlikely Ronaldo will sign for the La Liga giants.

As reported by Mirror Football, United are considering the option of allowing Ronaldo to leave Old Trafford on loan - a stance that surprised the forward.

Joining Ronaldo at Carrington this Tuesday is new United signing Christian Eriksen, who signed for the club on a free following his half-season with Brentford, and, rather awkwardly, pulled up at the training ground at the same time as Ferguson.

Lisandro Martinez will also meet his new teammates despite his £57million transfer from Ajax still yet to be officially confirmed.
