Schoolboy, 13, killed after being hit by Mini Cooper while riding his bike

A teenage boy has died after he was hit by a car while riding his bike last month.

Jake Day, 13, was cycling in Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire, at 1.25pm on February 23 when he was hit by a Mini Cooper.

The schoolboy was rushed to hospital where he had been fighting for his life, but sadly died over the weekend.

The Co-op Academy, where he went to school released a statement saying he died in his sleep "due to complications" following the accident.

Pals paid tribute to the teenager on social media saying he was "too young to be taken".

One wrote: "RIP Jake Day you was too young to be taken we had some good times together fly high angel you will be missed sending love to your family."

Another added: "Rest easy my brother, Love you always."

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses for the crash. They also said they have spoken to the driver.

In a statement to parents and carers, the school said: "As an academy, we are sad to have to share the devastating news that a brother of a child in our school has died over the weekend.

"Unfortunately, Jake Day, brother to Katie-Louise Day, sadly passed away in his sleep due to complications over the weekend.

"Jake was a pupil at our academy and with the support from Year 6 pupils and staff, we will be contributing with messages of support in a sympathy card to send to Katie-Louise and her family.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police told the MIrror: "Police have been informed that a 13-year-old boy seriously injured in a collision in Heckmondwike on Thursday February 23 has now sadly died in hospital.

"Enquiries remain ongoing by the Major Collision and Enquiry Team into the collision which took place at about 1.25pm after a blue Mini Cooper saloon and the male cyclist were in collision at the junction of Leeds Road and Muffit Lane, Heckmondwike.

"The driver of the car was spoken with.

"We continue to appeal for witnesses and anyone who saw the collision, or who has footage that will assist is asked to contact MCET on 101 or via the 101LiveChat facility on the West Yorkshire Police website. The log reference is 0767 of 23 February."
