Ralf Rangnick hired as Austria boss despite two-year Man Utd consultancy role

Ralf Rangnick has been hired as Austria boss but will go ahead with his two-year consultancy role at Manchester United.

There were claims that the German could leave Old Trafford altogether in the summer as reports emerged on Thursday that he would take the Austria national job.

But the Red Devils interim boss will still move upstairs following his brief spell in the dugout with Erik ten Hag named as his successor as he will continue to advise the Dutchman while taking over at Austria.

Rangnick has signed a two-year contract with Austria, which will be extended by a further two years should they qualify for Euro 2024 in Germany.

Rangnick confirmed the news in a statement, saying: "I will take over as national team manager of Austria at the end of the season but will continue my consultancy with Manchester United. I’m really looking forward to playing my part in helping United become a real force.

'It is an honour for me to take on the role of [Austria] manager,” he added. “The prospect of contesting the European Championships in Germany with a young team hungry for success fills me with great anticipation.”

Gerhard Milletich, President of the Austrian Football Association, added: “We are very pleased that in Ralf Rangnick we have been able to recruit an outstanding expert in international football as team manager. We are all convinced that he is the ideal man and that his vision will advance the national team and the OFB.”

Peter Schöttel sporting director of Austrian FA added: "After a very well-founded and intensive process, we were able to win Ralf Rangnick, an absolute top man with great international reputation as team boss. Makes me very proud and really looking forward to working together."

Rangnick insists the job will not interfere with his consultancy role at the club.

He said after United's 1-1 draw against Chelsea: "I would like to speak only about Manchester United and this evening. I would like to say that I will continue with my consultancy role at the club at the end of the season. I am happy and willing to help Manchester United, but it will leave space for another job alongside the consultancy role but I will only speak about Manchester United this evening."

It was the two usual suspects coming up big for Rangnick's men as Cristiano Ronaldo secured a point for Man United after Marcos Alonso fired Thomas Tuchel's side in front, while David de Gea produced a number of vital saves.

And Rangnick hailed the duo for helping United claim a "lucky draw." He added: "We showed a good reaction in the second half, and it was a great finish from Cristiano Ronaldo. In the first half we had our problems and we needed a few great saves from David de Gea.

"Second half we did better and we got more control. You could see they are a top team, no coincidence they won the Champions League and we don't have much confidence and had eight players missing.

"Although it was still a lucky draw, we earned it. At times we saw the gap, but they played with their best XI and we had players missing.

"We have problems with defending, not compact enough and not physical enough.

Ronaldo's future remains up in the air as it's unclear if he will be a part of Ten Hag's rebuild. And Rangnick revealed they have not come to a decision yet.

He said: "Not only the goal Cristiano scored but his whole performance, his attitude at age of 37, this is not normal to do that. If he plays like he did today he can still be a big help to this team.

"It is Erik's and Cristiano's decision for what he can do next but today his performance was really great."
