Premier League disqualify Roman Abramovich as Chelsea director following sanctions

The Premier League have confirmed they have disqualified Roman Abramovich as the director of Chelsea Football Club.

The billionaire saw his assets in the UK frozen by the UK government, putting the future of the west London club in doubt.

Now, the Premier League have released a statement confirming their decision to disqualify Abramovich as the Director of Chelsea Football Club.

The statement read: "Following the imposition of sanctions by the UK Government, the Premier League Board has disqualified Roman Abramovich as a Director of Chelsea Football Club."

The decision to sanction Abramovich was made on Thursday morning by the government, with the club releasing the following statement.

"By virtue of his 100 per cent ownership of Chelsea FC plc and affiliated entities, Chelsea FC would normally be subject to the same sanctions regime as Mr Abramovich," the statement read.

"However, the UK Government has issued a general licence that permits Chelsea FC to continue certain activities."

The sanctions are set to be reviewed in May, but Abramovich wants to complete the sale of Chelsea before then, although under the current sanctions, none of the money will go to him.

Thomas Tuchel's pre-match press conference on Friday was understandably dominated by the Abramovich situation and the German did not want to get too deep with it.

"It’s maybe way too early to talk about it. I don’t know exactly the rules about the current situation and I think, as the statement said from the club, there are negotiations and talks going on about the licence. So let’s see what’s coming," the Chelsea boss said.

"It makes not a lot of sense for me to comment on the situation now and give an outlook to the future in the summer.

"I trust in everybody who is in charge, I trust people who are in charge in the government to find a solution that keeps us going through the season, and gives us the possibility to be in charge of our actions in the summer."
